ABSTRACT

Basic research is the foundation for drug development and is necessary in order to define new drug targets and achieve effective ways of defining in vivo mechanisms. The pathway to new therapeutics relies on iterative cycles of refinement using in vitro models for how a compound will behave in vivo. Only after a new treatment has been demonstrated to be safe and effective in these model systems will it be considered for translation and testing in humans. We will discuss the process from fundamental observation to final therapeutic and the many pitfalls that can be encountered along the way. We will use specific examples from projects at various stages, including a new antidote for nerve gas, targeting reactivation of acetylcholinesterase.
