Abstract:
In this colloquium, we discuss how higher organisms use collective
phenomena to influence gene expression over large distances along the
genome. We start with a brief review of how gene expression is controlled in
simpler organisms and contrast some of the mechanisms in higher organisms.
Having introduced some of the outstanding problems in the field, we discuss
examples where non-trivial physical or chemical processes are at play in
determining how non-local regulatory effects in chromosomes are controlled.
