"Safety in Numbers"
Abstract: Microbes utilize population strategies to manage error
and acquire competitive advantage. I will discuss ongoing efforts
to measure the error spectrum of the protein pool in bacteria, and
its implications about the structure of the genetic code. Also I
will discuss the measurement and modeling of the dynamics of genetic
elements which enable phenotypic novelty. These elements are known
to persist at abnormally high rates in natural microbial populations.
We study this persistence and its relation to selection.
